Being Anxious

I had a friend with clinically recognized anxiety problems. She had no room for me to be anxious.

crudely-drawn image of two people talking; narrator says: โ€œSometimes I just get really stressedโ€; woman with anxiety diagnosis replies โ€œPeople like us with no kids donโ€™t know REAL stress!โ€

crudely-drawn image of two people talking; narrator says: โ€œIโ€™m really overwhelmed by work right nowโ€; woman with anxiety diagnosis replies โ€œWhat, with your four-hour work day and schedule you set yourself?โ€; parenthetical note adds โ€œMy work day is only that short sometimesโ€

crudely-drawn image of two people talking; narrator says: โ€œIt makes me so uncomfortable any time maintenance has to come into my apartmentโ€; woman with anxiety diagnosis replies โ€œFFF!! THEY donโ€™t care about anything! They just wanna do the job and get out as quick as possible!โ€

crudely-drawn image of two people talking; narrator says: โ€œI hate having to ask for help in a storeโ€; woman with anxiety diagnosis asks โ€œWhy?โ€; narrator says: โ€œTalking to salespeople is justโ€”stressful.โ€; woman with anxiety diagnosis says โ€œWhy? Itโ€™s what theyโ€™re there forโ€

I knew that much of my stress was out of proportion to the events around me . . . but that was part of the point, and she never let me get there.

When two friends both have problems, they should both be heard. There is a way to do this with respect.

This is bad:

two people sit in recliners; the first says โ€œANXIETY explain explainโ€ and the second says โ€œGreat, but MY <anxiety>โ€”explain explainโ€

This is fine:

in the top half, two people sit in recliners; the first says โ€œANXIETY explain explain explainโ€ and the second says nothing at all; in the lower half, a caption reads โ€œAnd on another dayโ€ and two people sit in recliners; the first says nothing and the second one says โ€œ(anxiety) explain explain explainโ€

But what I got was:

in the top half, two people sit in recliners; the first says โ€œANXIETY explain explain explainโ€ and the second says nothing at all; in the lower half, a caption reads โ€œAnd on another dayโ€ and two people sit in recliners; the second one says โ€œ(anxiety) explโ€”โ€ but this is overlapped by a word balloon from the first person saying โ€œDISMISSALโ€
